Title "What does $25 have to do with a life?"
There are few stories I rarely tell - this took place while pastoring in St. Louis, MI - I feel it is timely. We had a wonderful growth "spurt" at the St. Louis congregation - a joy for any small Church. Many singles - and a number of families with several children each. I remember a young family of 4 attending one Sunday. I found out that they were really struggling. The husband of the family was in a Masters program at CMU. He was struggling so bad that it looked like he would fail from the program. His wife was struggling to take care of two small children at home while bills continued to pile up among so many other things ... unbeknownst to me she was dealing with deep depression. I was selling cars for a friend. I sold no cars, but 2 trucks. I got paid for the one truck and was on my way to arrange for licensing - etc. On this particular "run" I was going right by this young family's house. I had just made $50! I kept feeling this strong impression/urge to stop and give this family half - $25 whole dollars! So I stopped. The mother was home with the children and I explained to her that I just made $50 selling a truck and I really felt impressed by the Lord to give her $25! I talked her in to taking the small amount of money and went on my way to the DMV, About 2 weeks later my wife received a thank you note in the mail. The young mother wrote these words (We still have the note). She wrote "I want to thank your husband for stopping by and giving us $25. I want to tell you something very important - it SAVED my life. What he did not know is I had worked through and finalized my suicide. I had everything thought through and ready to take my life that very day in a matter of minutes ....... until I realized through your husband that God cared for me." I did not have a CLUE. I don't consider myself extremely spiritual - rather simple actually - but I realized I must try and help this couple somehow and in someway. It wasn't me but God working through me. We never know what good we can do with a simple smile. A simple text or email. A simple letting someone know we are thinking of them. Or even a simple $25 to someone who is desperate. Our son Tim was the kind of fellow that called his wife and children every morning from work and left a voicemail of "I love you" - and encouraged many people small and great, I want to be like him and most of all like my Savior.
