"The value of salt"
In St. Matthew 5 - in the sermon on the mount - Jesus addressed a crowd that consisted of ordinary people. They were fishermen, some farmers, at least one was a tax collector. None were particularly religious. They were not political leaders nor were they born of nobility. Yet Jesus made it abundantly clear that they mattered in the world. He said directly and emphatically - "You ARE the salt of the earth". When I was about 7 or 8 years old my dad butchered a pig. After he had it all cut up he wrapped pieces in this redish colored salt. It was then stored upstairs in the attic for us to eat later, perhaps in the winter. During the time of Christ the fishermen from the sea of Galilee would wrap their catch of the day in salt to preserve it until they got it to market in Jersulem. For hundreds of years salt has been used as a preservative. Are we the salt of the earth because we have been entrusted with preserving the teachings of the Bible? Perhaps that is why Christ was so emphatic that we were of value and mattered so much to God. One time I came home from Bible College after being gone for weeks and my mother said "Gary, I will fix you anything you want to eat - what will it be?" I immediately said "fried potatoes and beans!" Now this is how I ate it - I covered my plate with fried potatoes then covered them with freshly boiled navy beans. AND put SALT and pepper on them! (my mouth is watering - that was my favorite meal). (Note: Job said in Job 6:6 "can flavorless food be eaten without salt?). It wasn't that beans and fried potatoes ALONE were my favorite meal .. but it was when I added salt - that brought out the flavor that made them so appealing to me. If Jesus was talking about salt bringing out flavor shouldn't there be something about our lives that is appealing to those who look on? Reese Witherspoon played the part of June Carter Cash in the movie "I Walk the Line." When interviewed, she said she was most impressed by the fact that June Carter Cash said of her life, "I just want to matter!" There are many other things we could say about salt - but I pray that there would be something about my life that would be appealing and would point others to Christ.
