God's Word to Moses at the Red Sea ...
"We Must Move Forward - As We Look Back"
Exodus chapter 14 we find these words from the Lord to Moses: "speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward"
In December of 1944 Gen George Patton made an incredibly audacious strategic move with his entire 3rd Army. With extremely inclement weather Patton made a 90 degree turn north - and (I believe I read once that the 3rd Army marched 3 days and 3 nights without rest and then engaged in battle) 107 miles to Bastogne - , where the 101st Airborne were defending a position that would have enabled Germany to move further north in Europe.
Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe and the 101st Airborne Division along with elements of the 10th Armored Division and the 82nd Airborne Division, arrived to counter-attack but, after heavy fighting, became encircled within the town. On 22 December German emissaries asked for the American surrender, to which the General answered tersely, “Nuts!”
The next day the skies cleared, allowing Allied air forces to retaliate and to drop much needed food, medicine, and weaponry to ground forces. On 26 December Patton's Third Army arrived and broke the siege. The official end of the Battle of Bastogne occurred three weeks later, when all fighting in the area ceased.
Many died in the Battle of the Bulge - perhaps you had loved ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice there. My dad who was in the Pacific lost his oldest brother, Guy L Dougherty, Jr, in the battle of the bulge.
As I think of the incredibly move by the 3rd Army (and the perseverence of those who defended and held Bastogne), who constantly moved FORWARD to keep us free and thwarted the aggression of tyranny - I am reminded as believers how important it is ... for us to continue to "grow in the Grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" and carry out the great commission of our God - to take the gospel to every person and nation on earth.
May the Lord help us and give us strength and wisdom as we continue to "March forward" for the cause of Christ.
