Title: "Little Things" I will start with a Bible story buried deep in the Old Testament in 2 Kings 6 - Elisha and his prophets (probably students) were putting up a new building by the River Jordon to house all of the students he was mentoring. So - they all pitched in cutting trees for lumber, but one of his students ran into a problem. While swinging the axe the head flew off and landed in the river. It disappeared because it was iron. Elisha's student was very upset - and finally revealed to Elisha the reason he was so upset - he had borrowed the axe. Then Elisha - threw a stick into the river where the axe had fallen in - and the axe head floated to the surface. Elisha's student reached down and picked up the axe head. Now what does this story tell us? The axe head had nothing to do with the coming of the Messiah. They were not in a worship service meditating on the books of Moses. Here is what I believe this scripture teaches - that God is interested in what WE are interested in! He is interested when we lose the car keys. When we have to cancel the vacation we were looking forward to. When our feelings our hurt by a careless word. When our kids are struggling in school. When we just don't feel good. When we are ready to leave for work and the tire is flat. Back to the story of Elisha - it is so encouraging to know that God is interested in the things we care about - regardless of how small or insignificant they might seem to others. If God cared about a borrowed axe and performed a miracle so it could be returned won't he do something comparable for us? I believe He will.
