The Influence Of Light
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, "You are the light of the world. A city that sits on a hill cannot be hid. ... let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven". In my early college days I remember driving at night on Interstate 70 in Missouri many times and as I crested a large hill all of a sudden I could see the lights of Kansas City shining brilliantly! Over the years in Communist countries, individuals have not been allowed to worship or profess their faith in Christ publicly. Those who have been open about their faith have often been severely punished, imprisoned, or even killed. One day soldiers took ten Christians to an isolated place in Siberia where it was bitterly cold. They were taken to a frozen lake and made to remove all their clothes. They were told that they could come in out of the cold to warmth if they renounced their faith in Jesus Christ. Nine of those men would not renounce their faith and stood on the ice until they froze to death. The last man broke and shuffled in from the cold, denying his faith. One of the soldiers was so moved by the courage and love (light) for Christ of the nine other men, that he took off his own clothes and took that man's place and stood with faith in Christ until he froze to death. I think that tells the story of what loving God and being a light in a dark world means. I pray that our faith in Christ will remain resolute and may we show our love for God, influencing others to follow Christ as well.
