Getting Christ's Attention

** Getting Jesus' Attention: A Devotional Luke 18:38-39 ** In our lives, there are moments when we yearn for connection, recognition, or simply a listening ear. One such moment from my past illustrates this desire vividly. Many years ago, during the primary elections, Edward Kennedy visited Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I lived. Excited by the prospect of seeing a prominent political figure, I made my way to the airport, joining the throngs of supporters and onlookers. The atmosphere was electric, filled with anticipation as Kennedy made his way through the crowd. As he approached, I found myself about three rows back, and in a moment of boldness, I stretched my hand through the sea of people and called out, “Hey Ted!” To my amazement, he stopped, turned around, and shook my hand. In that fleeting moment, I felt a connection, as though I had reached beyond the crowd to touch a figure of significance. I realized that sometimes, it takes a loud voice and an outstretched hand to grab someone’s attention, even if just for an instant. This experience resonates deeply with the biblical account found in Luke 18:38-39, where a blind man, desperate for healing, calls out to Jesus, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Despite the crowd’s attempts to silence him, he cries out even louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” His persistence catches Jesus' attention, prompting Him to stop and engage with the man. This poignant moment illustrates a profound truth: when we reach out to Jesus, often with heartfelt cries, He hears us. The blind man’s determination highlights an essential aspect of faith. Life can often feel overwhelming, much like a crowded airport filled with distractions and noise. Yet, amidst the chaos, Jesus is attentive to our cries for help. His response to the blind man serves as a reminder that no plea for mercy goes unheard. Just as I reached out for Edward Kennedy, we too can stretch our hands and voices towards Jesus, who is always ready to listen. In our daily lives, we may find ourselves in need of Jesus' attention, whether it is for guidance, healing, or comfort. The lesson here is clear: all it takes is a sincere cry from our hearts, and Jesus will stop and listen. We don't need to be part of a crowd or have the perfect words; what matters is the authenticity of our desperation and our willingness to seek Him. In conclusion, let us remember that Jesus is always within reach. When we feel lost or unheard, we can cry out to Him, confident that He will pause amidst the busyness of life to hear our pleas. Just as I managed to connect with Edward Kennedy, we can connect with the Savior of the world by simply reaching out in faith.
